I recently read ‘Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother’ by Amy Chua after I picked it up at the airport and couldn’t put it down.
I was expecting a very righteous account of how pushing your kids to their limits at all times is the best parenting style. In fact though, this book is a memoir from the mother’s perspective, about how pushing her kids didn’t always work, and when it did. It’s more than that though - it a memoir of the mother’s life since having her daughters. It’s a really honest read full of double-edged comedic, “I can’t believe she actually said that”, and bare-all humbling moments. Very thought provoking and an addictive read.
Her daughter Sophia wrote an open letter to the NY Times after her mother’s book received a lot of backlash:
