Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, president of Kalmykia — one of Russia’s constituent republicans and Europe’s only Buddhist nation — has just resigned in order to pursue the presidency of the International Chess Federation.
In the past, Ilyumzhinov has plunged his nation into financial ruin through his love of chess — he attempted to construct a $1+ billion “Chess City” on the outskirts of the capital. Also, he claims he was abducted by space aliens.
