How long to Animals live? (Woah, check out the Pearl Mussel)
Did you know that Australia is the world’s largest exporter of live animals for slaughter?
According to research done by admirable animal rights charity WSPA, Australia exports over 4 million live sheep to the Middle East annually, causing for these gentle animals to suffer from severe heat exhaustion and numerous diseases as a result of their painful journey across the globe. It is estimated that tens of thousands of our exported animals die during this process each year, a figure moderated lightly as the lost animals are considered mere ‘collateral damage’ to the industry.
The sheep that survive the process are then victim to some of the cruelest conditions for live animals on the globe, as they are exposed to treatment that is deemed illegal in Australia. While Australia would like to boast of having fair animal cruelty laws, their participation in exporting live animals under such irresponsible means makes them the world leader in this cruel trade. The WSPA suggests that during a 9 year ban on live exports to Saudi Arabia (1991-2000), the exportation of chilled meat - killed ‘humanely’ by comparison - to the country tripled, proving that the exportation of live animals to the Middle East is entirely unnecessary.
