Nell the Narcoleptic - Our 3d Short.

Thought I’d put our 3d Short up here incase anyone missed it.  We’re in production for a 5minute sequel, stay tuned!

We have a dedicated site over at www.nellthenarcoleptic.com with a bit more info :-)

My Class 2 Progress Reel - Animation Mentor

In some ways this might look like a step backwards, but believe me it’s not! Although I’ve been animating for a while, the Animation Mentor course has been wonderful in filling in the some of the foundation gaps in my skillset.

I want to make animation to blow audiences out of the water! Can’t want to get through Class 3 - Advanced Body Mechanics with my mentor Jalil Sadool (Weta).

Mentors so far:
Class 1 - Don Kim
Class 2 - Leigh Rens

“Tunnel Vision”.  This is one of those accidentally sweet pictures that I take no credit for whatsoever. (Hey, anyone can press the shutter button randomly!). Taken in a tunnel at Taroko Gorge, Taiwan.

“Through Misty Morning Eyes”.  I took this on an early morning walk when I came across some abandoned glasses at Sun Moon Lake in Taiwan

I had a fire up my bum once upon a time to write and illustrate a children’s book.  It was going to be about an alien that Dexter (a kid) finds and carries with him everywhere in his backpack as he tries to help him make a new spaceship (using the household iron as a shell).

Anyway as this is on my ever expanding shelf of unfinished projects, I thought I might as well post the sketches I did for it so they can at least see the light of day.

A doodle I did at the ripe age of 19 while pondering life

Some life drawing I did a while ago.

I have a 3d company - Chilliboom Graphics.  This is our showreel!  As you can see, we do it all.  Contact us (email: info at chilliboom dot com ) to see what we can do for you

Ommon from Ticket to Ride’s (my student reel) original character design, for the record. I ended up having to give him knees due to technical difficulties in making him walk and run.

I finally uploaded Ticket to Ride to Vimeo, I’ve been meaning to do this for years!  Some of you will already have seen it on youTube.. but I wanted it on vimeo cos vimeo has better standards.

This is my student reel made at Media Design School in Auckland 2007, with a focus on character animation. The main character is Ommon - a vertically challenged alien.

Soundtrack is Sing, Sing, Sing - Benny Goodman.
Thanks to Doug Minkler for permission to use his artwork as the posters in the subway.

A 3D texturing reel I created in under 2 weeks in Maya. By keeping the concept simple, I was able to demonstrate the skill set I was trying to show in a short amount of time.

“Consequence of Time” - an entry I made for a contest at NZCGI a while back.  The spec was to show something that clearly showed that ‘time had passed’…
My concept: “A cuckoo - sick and tired of his job of popping out every hour on the hour, popping out one final time. He’s hung by a noose, strangled with a horrible expression at the end of his platform. He’s literally sick to death of the job. It’s a consequence of him having to keep time all these years…”
I made this while a big project was on at work and I really was only able to complete the bare bones in order to get my concept across. Always meant to go back and rework it because I think it could make a powerful image.

A shot I took at Taroko Gorge in Hualian, Taiwan.  Added my current flavour of colour palette to this image, but the beauty truly comes from nature itself.  The gorge is made of super old marble, and the waters that traverse its passages ebb and flow with a calm beauty.
